Animals talk...if you know how to listen.

Robin Calloway has always been special--a misfit who lives more in her own head than the real world. Even her father thinks she's crazy. So when her brother is found murdered, she's sent to a mental institution for observation. With the help of Dr. G, Robin begins to untangle memories of the killing, but is reluctant to admit the truth about herself she can both hear and speak to animals, and this curse forces her to "sleepwalk"--or blank out--for most of her day.

Fearing both the local sheriff and the label of schizophrenic, Robin escapes the hospital and flees into the Texas Hill Country during hunting season. To survive, she must not only accept her unique senses, but use them before she's hunted down by a killer desperate to hide the truth. A must read for fans of dark and disturbing suspense and psychic fantasy.

Robin can speak to animals in her head, or at least she believes she can. She is a resident in a psychiatric hospital and is accused of the murder of her brother while he was hunting. She knows she is innocent but can't prove it without escaping the hospital and using her gift of speaking with the animals to retrace her step of the night her brother was killed.

I enjoyed this novel quite a bit. Although the bulk of the book is too peaceful for me to consider it a "thriller" it as definitely suspenseful. Robin is believably portrayed as an innocent soul. The way her gift is written felt so realistic I wondered (almost) if it were really possible to speak to animals like Robin.

The ending was filled with some twists which was surprising considering how straight forward most of the book seemed to be. It as a pleasant surprise to see how the characters were connected.

My biggest complaint was the slang that as used in the narrative sections. Words like "nekkid" and "woulda" really bothered me and made Robin come off as uneducated.

Overall, I rate Season of Lies by Monica Shaughnessy 4 stars and would recommend it to someone looking for a unique read.

I really enjoyed this book. Different kind of book, but it kept you interested. I recommend this book to everyone.
Interesting. I just finished it last night. It is a unique story with clean writing. I'm looking forward to reading "Universal Forces" also by this author.
It took me a bit to get into this story but once I did it was pretty good. So if you are patient and allow the story to unfold it's worth a read. Happy Reading.
Great story about Robin who can communicate with deers. The writing is superb and this makes for a fast read. If you like stories with heart you will love this.
Thought this was a well written book and love the style. The way she wrote the accent of the speakers was very interesting. Plot was excellent and it was a real page turner. Disclaimer I thought this young lady in high school and am very proud of how she has turned out. Wish I could take credit for it butI did not see this talent when she was in school. Great book Monica waiting for the next adult novel.
This was an extremely well written, unique and interesting blend of genres - mixing a murder mystery with an unusual fantasy/paranormal twist. The story is set in small town Texas and brings an authentic and unusual cast of characters to play out the mystery. I would highly recommend the book to readers interested in plot twists, intrigue, and who have a taste for the bizarre and fantastic.
This was a relatively short book, most likely aimed towards teens. The Teen Heroine can understand and speak to all creatures. There is a murder mystery, a look into a minimum security type mental institution, and the budding of a young romance along with the animal communication.

It was an OK read for its target audience. The Southern type slang and accents did get irritating after a while. The writing needs a little polish. I personally found the story rather depressing; however, the ending was more upbeat, so that saved it for me. It did have very interesting characters and animals.
